Lean Thoughts

This week’s Issue | 04/03/2019

My big AHAAA this week came as we worked with a local organization.   They have been in business for many years and thought that they were extremely good at their process … but as a team they had grown together with little outside influence … hence their processes just evolved around their conventional thinking without taking on some additional insights … so this now became a fun exercise for us.   Which reminded me that even if you think you have done a successful Lean deployment you have only just started the journey.

Then we zipped over to Quebec where we quickly witnessed a situation of customer intimidation because as a supplier we were unable to gain control of the meeting to gather the information we need to build a profitable and Lean process.  Capturing the Voice of the Customer (VOC) can be vital to your success in developing your process because the customer really does not know or understand your process so only asks for requirements based on their assumptions.

This week we were able to work with a team that thought they were doing great but they recognized that they were simply passing the same thoughts internally between each other and not gaining additional insights from outside eyes … so it was great to participate as an influencer.  We are going back to help them make some significant improvements … as they said we wanted to bring you in several years ago but just could not afford the investment … but we cringe at how much money they left on the table by waiting.

So this week we review some critical Leadership traits

It was a great weekend for the planet as the Resident Love Goddess celebrated another birthday.  Fortunately we were able to assist her with the celebration.

Hope that all of you spoiled your significant other for Valentine’s day.  I decided to take the Resident Love Goddess out for lunch and a long walk on the beach even though it was in the negative temperatures and snowing … her warmth made for a good walk.

Many folks adopt Lean Methodologies incorrectly by implementing solutions first before defining what should be the purpose.  This week we want you to look at everyone of your processes as being done on a conveyor belt and then how can you improve it.   I implore you to look at those office processes where typically we find the most inefficiencies.  To get you started this video although funny is likely happening within your operations.

I always was a fan of Super Dave and times when people followed instructions perfectly it could result in some negative results.  Hence we really need our people’s intuition to insure nothing bad will happen.

For the Resident Love Goddess and myself our biggest reward working with our client partners is to witness the personal growth of individuals.  So it was very cool to see operators that were shy to be board owners a year ago now report and reflect on performance as a business owner.  This week I was once again reminded just how important it is to assemble the troops to reflect on the previous month’s performance while planning for the coming three months.

In spite of telling them that this was going to happen they did not believe and it reinforced to me the need and power of Nemawashi … discussed in this week’s newsletter.

It was an amazing week as we had friends from Australia stay with us for a few days … it allowed us to be tourists in our own area and lots of discussion and reflections on what had transpired in our lives since our last encounter … it was wonderful and hopefully created new memories for all of us.

This encounter made me reflect on memories created during my paddling days and how some actions later impacted me during my career journey.  Most important that as you create muscle memory to perform a difficult task that you do not allow this to lull you into complacency and that you need to constantly find your new edge in order to remain competitive … hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter.

Many times as an organization we feel that we are a victim of our customers … but your role is to relieve customer stress.  Maybe you have a chance to relieve both … read on and also how 5S will improve your organizational brand.

I think it is time to discuss organizational culture … you can either let it morph on its own or you can engineer it either directly or indirectly. We had a wonderful week once again in Quebec where our client was surprised just how big an impact his personality was having on the success of the business … and now how to replicate this trait into other’s of his team … a real challenge.

The times are about to change and are you ready?  We have been operating within a super charged economy where volume has covered up our sins and allowed us to continue to make significant profit while scrambling to find people … good people.  But looking at the markets, the price of oil, trade wars and tariffs things are likely to change soon.   So now is the time to prepare your organization to survive and thrive during a downturn while you can.  Even if the economy continues to thrive it is still cause to hit the pause button and take time for observation and implement improvements.Casual Glance

Welcome to 2019 and let this be an exciting New Year for all in a very positive sense.

Depending on your vantage point Inventory can be either a blessing or a curse … but most Lean Practitioners view it as a curse since it consumes so much of you highly regarded cash, while others may view it as an asset since that is where it is documented on your balance sheet.  But being a Lean Practitioner we thought it better to share some manners in how to reduce inventory.

Loved this comment I recently saw through my Linked-In portal …

What happens if we train our employees and they leave?

With a response …

What happens if we don’t train them and they stay?

Proves that you can have the product and or technology but your people still become your differenator … so you need to invest in them.  Contact us to explore potential workshops we can deliver to improve your organization’s performance.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!  We hope that Santa was very kind to you this year and you are ready for an exciting 2019.   We open the year with some non-traditional thought starters such as adding a concierge to your operation, adopting the notion of “not counting” and finally a good economic fix for the economy.
