It seems that today every organization is looking for people … good people and not surprising in most cases that we have been exposed to up to 90% resign from the organization within 60 days.  Most of you follow and likely have in place processes to support the 3R’s of HR

  • Recruit
  • Retain
  • Recognize

But often overlooked is how we on board new employees so a recent article I read had to be shared.

We work with a small specialty coffee roaster and they were very excited this week once they had learned that they had won 3 awards …  You can order their coffee on-line

We’re very excited to be a triple medalist competing among 900 of North America’s best coffee roasters during this year’s competition in Portland, Oregon…

This past week we were asked to conduct an audit of a manufacturing operation for a client so they would feel confident in partnering with this organization for a significant project.  Now this organization was definitely a world-class operation utilizing the latest technology … but they still are dependent on people to optimize  the technology …. So definitely an opportunity to embrace the utilization of TPM.  Remember, we can assist you with your TPM deployment and hopefully this week’s article will re-invigor your TPM program.

CORKS

When you open a bottle of wine; when you use some types of hot pads; when you walk on certain soft floorings; do you ever wonder about the cork that’s used?

Where does cork come from?

How is it produced?

The economy is humming and most organizations we inter-act with are looking for people … good people but people have a choice in where to donate their “Gift of Time” in exchange for a pay cheque.  Hence if you want professional results you need to provide a professional environment an environment that encourages people to want to be part of a winning team … hence the fodder for this week’s newsletter.

We had the fortune to work with a client in the Montreal area so we took the opportunity to visit and watch a spectacular light show “Aura” at the Norte Dame Basilica.  All I can say is WOW !!! the attached link does not do the show justice and we suggest that you book tickets well in advance … the show definitely is enough to make Montreal a destination

Most organizations implement their Lean journey with the wrong focus … typically they start with 5S … workplace organization because it creates a huge stunning visual effect.  However, if you start with how to optimize material conveyance then the other Lean methodologies just start to make sense as part of your implementation.

We just returned from a week in Quebec where it was wonderful to observe the maturity of Team Members where the culture speed of the organization was able to optimize some Lean Principals and ready for the next step of their journey.

Lean Practitioners LOVE whiteboards and check-lists they also live by the old adage “what gets measured, gets done” so you likely will see plenty of charts within the work area so this week we take a closer look at Control Charts and how to use them effectively.

We hope that you are enjoying your labour day weekend … you have worked extremely hard to deserve this day of celebration !!!

As we get to the close of summer many organizations begin to think about the strategic plan for 2019 … but to measure how we do we need strong organizational KPI.  Now we believe that that KPI at the execution point need to be immediate and change behavior quickly however at a higher level they need to measure a change in course of direction.

We recently did a project for a client to nest items in a tool box and we were really impressed with the results and how effective the solution became … so we decided to share the solution in case you may decide to have us assist you.

At this time of year organizations begin to ponder their plans for the coming year or the next 5 years.  Planning involves both Strategic and Tactile initiatives and then a methodology and timing for execution.  I am still a raving fan of using EVSM to find improvements to existing processes but we still may need another approach to the Strategic Plan … so this week we explore the planning process.

Many times I am amazed at the stupidity of organizations.  In order to boost profit they make the wrong decisions like let us eliminate travel, no new hires, eliminate training and then I become the victim being told to terminate an employee that has been loyal to an organization for 20+ years because they are no longer relevant … why because the organization failed to provide training to the employee to keep them fresh.  This why this week we look at how do you look at your cycle time management and what do you do to manage or improve it?

Doing a Value Stream Mapping workshop is a valuable tenant in your repository to force you to push the “pause” button on your organization by forcing you and a close team of practitioners to get “ON” our business instead of constantly being “IN” the processes.  Of course adding some outside eyes into the mapping exercise will deliver additional benefits.  James Womack used to issue some great thought provoking letters .. so this week we decided to re-issue one of Jim’s letters regarding Value Stream Mapping.

If you have not done or reviewed a Value Stream Map for several years we suggest doing the investment again and if you need some facilitation help … contact us.

Poor planning on your part does not justify heroics by me to satisfy the goal.  A big difference between a robust Lean organization is the amount of time they invest in anticipating potential problems and how they can be averted. Hence comes into play the power of an FMEA … but once again many organizations jump directly to developing an FMEA instead of following a methodology to create an FMEA that is robust and meaningful.
