Lean Thoughts

Doing a Value Stream Mapping workshop is a valuable tenant in your repository to force you to push the “pause” button on your organization by forcing you and a close team of practitioners to get “ON” our business instead of constantly being “IN” the processes.  Of course adding some outside eyes into the mapping exercise will deliver additional benefits.  James Womack used to issue some great thought provoking letters .. so this week we decided to re-issue one of Jim’s letters regarding Value Stream Mapping.

If you have not done or reviewed a Value Stream Map for several years we suggest doing the investment again and if you need some facilitation help … contact us.

Poor planning on your part does not justify heroics by me to satisfy the goal.  A big difference between a robust Lean organization is the amount of time they invest in anticipating potential problems and how they can be averted. Hence comes into play the power of an FMEA … but once again many organizations jump directly to developing an FMEA instead of following a methodology to create an FMEA that is robust and meaningful.

For many employment is just a job a way to exchange a “gift of time” to obtain money to pay bills while others dive into a challenge to formulate a career.  However all of them can recall the work environment they existed within. You have heard enough from me that your 5S strategy goes beyond optimization of people and processes but also is your brand management.  So this week I was surprised when I received our local Chamber of Commerce monthly magazine and instead of companies hoping to attract new customers over 80% where using ads to recruit additional employees.  Sometimes instead of adding manpower you need to look at your production requirements with a different paradigm.   If you get stuck feel free to contact us to assist you as “outside eyes”

We are constantly amazed while visiting organizations how they seem to amass money in spite of the lack of meaningful metrics or stuck operating with old paradigms when they could do so much better.  However a common tone these days is the inability to attract and retain talent … but when you look at their processes and environment you can quickly understand why people do not want to donate their gift of time to that organization.

Another myth shattered … during this past week a client thought if they deployed Standard Work Instructions all of their problems would be solved … noooo !!  Standard Work instructions are not created for our employees but rather for the rest of us so that we can audit and improve the process … so this week we explore further the use of Standard Work.

A company from Australia called OZ is promoting the notion of Ideation to assist organizations to develop new products with different thought processes … so this week we share some of their tips and tricks.

This week’s Issue | 11/06/2018

you can have the product and the technology but at the core it is the people that really make your brand.  Respect of your people is crucial towards the ongoing success of your business so this week we explore how not to abuse your people and how to encourage them.

Dad sent me this awesome link earlier this week;

1st sequence – catches half a dozen fish in one strike.

2nd sequence – plunges talons into deep water to grab the Flounder.

3rd sequence – captures a big old fish that looks as if it weighs more than he does!

This is incredible to watch!

Many people council us for advice … hopefully they “Hear” , “Listen” and “Do” but unfortunately in the majority of cases at best they only “Hear”.  Although there is a desperate need to make change they fear the investment to enable change thinking that it is only going to be an expense.   Such was the case recently as we tried to coach a senior executive that had recently moved to run a significant global organization.  So we thought that this week’s newsletter should serve as a guide to those that are facilitating change at their organization.
