The following calculation recently posted is a good method which will get you to a good starting Kanban level:
No. Of Kanbans = Average Daily Demand x (OC+LT+TT+ST/CC)
OC = Order Cycle
LT = Process Lead Time
TT = Transit Time
ST = Safety Time
CC = Container Capacity
