Which A.I. Large Language Model to Use & When

Writer's picture: Richard KunstRichard Kunst

Mariela gets up early every morning to go for a walk. During her walks she meets, greets and converses with many of our local dogs who always seem to come attached to an owner, so she speaks to them also.

Well Frances happens to be one of those owners attached to a dog and it turns out to help someone she decided to do some research about various AI programs. I think she did an amazing job (although not very scientific, I don't think she even used AI), but her final product is useful and probably handy to keep handy. So credit this week goes to Frances.

When not being walked by her dog Frances is a fractional HR Coach so if you are in the Toronto or Ontario Area check her out.

Sorry it is big ...
Sorry it is big ...

Here is the introduction to some AI Large Language Model along with features, capabilities and strengths.

  • Data Analysis: Excels in automated data analysis, offering insights from complex datasets

  • Native Tool Use: Incorporates advanced capabilities for using external tools and APIs

  • Language Translation: Provides accurate translations, fostering cross-cultural communication

  • Complex & Creative Problem-Solving: Identifies patterns and connections in data to generate innovative solution.

Best Use Cases:

  • Fact-checking and current information retrieval

  • Complex problem-solving and reasoning tasks

Of note: if you or your company uses the Google suite of products, Gemini is usually tied to these for a charge. Can be very helpful and powerful in this instance

ChatGPT

Strengths:

  • Natural and engaging conversational abilities

  • Excellent creative text generation (stories, poems, etc.)

  • Effective brainstorming and idea generation

  • Maintains context and responds in a human-like way

  • Content Creation: Highly effective for generating articles, social media posts, and creative writing

Best Use Cases:

  • Casual conversation and chatbot interactions

  • Creative writing and content drafting

  • Exploring ideas and different perspectives

Still the most accessible AI tool. You can download it to your phone and ask it general questions on the go: e.g. how many TSPs in a TBSP

CoPilot

Strengths:

  • Specifically designed for code generation and assistance

  • Automates coding tasks (completions, functions, debugging)

  • Helps learn new programming languages

  • Improves coding efficiency and reduces errors

  • Note: Paid version can be tied to all of your MSOffice systems (Teams). It will write notes, summarize the notes succinctly and note the action items in meetings.

Best Use Cases:

  • Coding in various programming languages

  • Learning new coding concepts and techniques

  • Automating repetitive coding tasks

  • Similar to ChatGPT – can be used for everyday Q&A

Perplexity

Strengths:

  • Provides answers with citations and sources

  • Excellent for research and information gathering

  • Summarizes and explains complex topics effectively,

Best Use Cases:

  • Multiple AI Models: Allows users to switch between different language models for varied responses

  • Research needing verifiable sources and specialized searches

  • Market research and Analysis

  • Understanding complex topics with evidence

  • Fact-checking and verifying information

  • Multimodal Capabilities: The Pro version can generate images and process uploaded documents and image

In my opinion – and as of today, I like Perplexity for gathering real data and papers and references. It will provide citations and links to articles and provide details as to where it has pulled the information from

Claude

Strengths:

  • Focus on safety and helpfulness

  • Natural and extended conversations

  • Detailed and informative responses

  • Minimizes biased or harmful outputs

  • Document Processing: Particularly strong in analyzing and summarizing lengthy documents

  • Research: Offers detailed, nuanced responses to complex queries, making it suitable for academic and professional research

Best Use Cases:

  • Complex conversations requiring safety and reliability

  • Getting in-depth explanations and information

  • Ethical creative writing and reasoning

Of note: Claude was built with a “conscience”. If you ask it for extremist items, it will shut you down. I once informed Claude that the item it was creating for me was sexist – and it shut me down.

Jasper

Strengths:

Full disclosure – I have not as yet tried this. You have to pay for this service, but the feedback on-line and from marketing persons is that it is a great tool

Llama 2 – Meta’s AI

Strengths:

  • Open-source nature for accessibility and customization

  • Strong foundation for research and development

  • Adaptable for specific tasks and fine-tuning

Best Use Cases:

  • Experimenting with and researching LLMs

  • Developing custom AI applications

  • Tasks requiring flexibility

Full disclosure, I have not as yet tried it. My understanding is that it can do far more than listed here, especially with large documents, but not used it as yet.

Grok- Elon Musk’s AI

Strengths:

  • Access to real-time information via the X platform

  • Informal and humorous conversational tone

  • Provides unfiltered and up-to-date information

Best Use Cases:

  • Staying current on events and trends

  • Tasks where an informal tone is appropriate

Deep Seek – China’s AI

Very recently released to the public

  • Open AI – meaning it is open to everyone for free

  • Critics say that it will scrape your data for the AI

  • Note, if you really look at all your apps on your phone, each one tells you that it is gathering data for AI – so no different that any other APP or platform

  • Similar to Chatbot at the moment

  • A little glitchy as it cannot manage all the traffic – I have experienced this when trying to compare data from ChatGPT and Deep Seek

  • It allows users to access it via an APP on your phone, so it can be used similarly to ChatGPT

  • My opinion: it is only going to get stronger and will be an alternative to US AI models. I have a feeling it will start dropping additional items similar to ChatGPT – e.g. picture generation
